For generations, science was seen as a window into God’s design. But somewhere along the way, the conversation shifted and faith was pushed out. It’s time to bring God back into the center of discovery.
Modern-day scientists have framed belief in God as illogical, non-rational, and compared it to a fairytale - all while claiming scientific evidence and statistics using vocabulary that sounds like a foreign language. They’ve barricaded God from entering the scientific conversation using fear and mockery to discredit their opponents.
There’s no other way to say it except that this has been a full-on attack against God.
Why Teaching Science Through a Biblical Lens Changes Everything
The reality of the matter is that before this hostile takeover took place, the greatest minds in human history all acknowledged God’s role within science. It was common knowledge that science and God were intrinsically linked. Read some of the quotes below.
Isaac Newton is quoted saying, “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.”
Albert Einstein said, “The more I study science, the more I believe in God.”
Louis Pasteur said, “The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings me nearer to God.”
The truth is that God has always intended for science to be a way that we can discover more of Him.
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”
Colossians 1:16 NKJV
“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,”
Romans 1:20 NKJV
You see, the plan of God has always been for us to be surrounded by Him. Everywhere we look, examine, and explore is meant to capture our hearts as we see the nature of God.
Jesus, for example, is God in the flesh. We can look at Jesus and gain a clear picture of who the Father is. What we can see and experience was meant to invite us into a greater understanding of what we cannot see - God.
While Jesus is the perfect picture of God, we also can see fragments of God scattered throughout Creation. We begin to understand them according to our understanding of Christ.
So how do we help our children and students see what God has always intended us to see?
-
Teach them the Scriptures to Show them God’s Heart
Any house that is going to last requires a firm foundation. Similarly, if the foundation of our understanding needs to be repaired and strengthened we have to address it. The scriptures reveal the foundation that we build our lives upon, Jesus Christ. It’s imperative that we begin our educational journey on the Truth of what God says. Teach your students this and spend time ensuring it’s established within their heart before you move on.
-
Frame Science as an Adventure into Discovering God’s Secrets
Proverbs 25:2 NLT says that, “It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them.”
This means that God has hidden things for kings (every believer) to discover. Science is a tremendous aspect of that discovery! We observe, ask questions, make guesses, and test our predictions in an effort to discover what God has designed into our world. It truly is a privilege to have this Heavenly Adventure gifted to us.
It’s important your student or child sees science this way because it establishes an eternal connection with learning, rather than a “I have to do this work” mindset. This sets the stage for what education and learning really is about - God.
-
As they learn Science, embed God into the Concepts
Jesus commonly taught spiritual truth by using natural things that people could relate with. As you are teaching your child or students important academic content, be sure to connect them to God and His heart for them. These types of connections are essential for learning and retaining information.
With our “Biology: Designed By God” curriculum we’ve already written a complete textbook that engages your child or students with both the scientific and the Biblical. They are totally immersed into God’s reality for them. If you are looking for a place to start, this is a great first step!
-
Ask Questions that Lead them into the Scriptures, to Investigate on Their Own
Questions have tremendous power, especially when used effectively. In fact, I’d say that not all questions are created equal. See, if you ask Google a question that is poorly worded or not specific it will not show you the information that you are looking for. However, a good question can empower you with the knowledge you need.
Too often, we ask our learners questions that simply assess the scientific part of the lesson but we don’t question them into the scriptures. Consider good questions that cause them to think deeply about both science and God.
-
Give them Space to Process, a Chance to Discuss, and an Opportunity for Feedback
Students need space to process what you’ve just asked them, space to formulate a plan, and consider how they will accomplish what you’ve asked them to do. From processing they should be given a chance to discuss and receive feedback. These are three critical aspects of learning that boost retention rates, strengthen critical thinking skills, and improve engagement.
The environment you create during this should be safe for students to step out and possibly make a mistake without feeling like they are getting punished. Take these opportunities to praise and celebrate them for stepping out. It will build confidence within them to open up and share.
Discussing with them gives them the chance to feel heard and seen, allowing them to be understood for what they are trying to communicate. When these two components are done well, they will naturally receive feedback from a place of openness.
God designed every part of creation to reveal His nature, and science is one of His favorite languages. When we teach our children to see Him in every discovery, we’re shaping not just students, but worshipers.
If you’re ready to begin that journey, start with our Biology: Designed by God curriculum today.
