Is Evolution the Only Answer? What Christian Students Should Know

Doc Brown’s famous clock tower scene in “Back to the Future” is based on the idea that if Marty McFly travels 88 mph at precisely 10:04 p.m., he will travel back to the future from 1955 to 1985.

How is this possible? 

According to Doc Brown, lightning strikes at 10:04 pm in a highly specific location, and that lightning strike provides power to travel in time. Marty, traveling 88 mph, must also be in that highly specific location where the lightning will strike at the exact moment it happens. They have one chance to get this right, and if you’ve seen the movie, you know what happens. 

Unfortunately, this isn’t science; it’s science fiction!

Yet, evolution’s “proven” theory of how life first began on Earth sounds a lot like Doc Brown’s sci-fi time travel plot. Here’s a summarized version.

Earth is extremely hot (3,860 degrees Fahrenheit) because asteroids have pummeled it, there’s no ozone layer, and tons of volcanic activity. The atmosphere did not have oxygen but instead was filled with gases like methane, ammonia, and water vapor. These gases are also found in the ocean, alongside phosphorus and hydrogen. As these gases are floating around in the ocean, suddenly lightning strikes and provides energy through these chemical reactions! 

These random lightning strikes continue over time, and through a gradual process, the chemical reactions with these non-living gases form organic living molecules such as amino acids and nucleotides. Eventually, these amino acids and nucleotides increase their complexity to form RNA and proteins (Miller, 1953).

Soon, the first life form will rise. It’s a prokaryotic cell. 

Seeing The Theory of Evolution Correctly - From a Teacher

In fact I authored that textbook and I can tell you my goal was to present the theory of evolution so that students could explain it better than an evolutionist but then turn around and evaluate it critically using scientific evidence and logical reasoning.

See, I’m a former public high school teacher who taught evolution for over eight years. Unfortunately this flawed theory is presently active in every public high school in America, without question. Students are being trained to think that their existence is the result of random natural processes and implicitly that this is all there is to life. 

Many different Christian science curriculum’s approach this topic in a variety of ways. Some teach that the earth is not millions of years old but rather “young.” Another group teaches that God literally created our universe, planets, and all of life in seven days. A few textbooks dive into the science behind Noah’s Ark and how that event shaped the earth today. 

I don’t refute any of these ideas, I simply have chosen to spend time on the one thing that matters - we, and all of creation, is a product of God’s intentional and purposeful design. 

 

5 Scientific and Logical Reasons Evolution Is Not the Only Explanation

  1. (Macro) Evolution has never been observed…ever. 

  2. Comparative anatomy, embryology, and DNA are not exclusive to the theory of Evolution in which they objectively reveal common ancestry over a common Designer.

  3. Cell theory has supported that life comes from life, yet abiogenesis claims life came from non-living chemicals.

  4. Miller and Urey’s famous experiment has incorrect conditions for early earth, invalidating its support for abiogenesis.

  5. Evolution cannot explain where the non-living chemicals originated from and the strongest answer for this is a Big Bang.
